OAU Student Portal
View Live ProjectOverview
I designed and developed a comprehensive student portal for Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) with a primary focus on accessibility for visually impaired students. The platform combines modern web technologies with advanced accessibility features, including voice commands, text-to-speech, and screen reader optimization, while maintaining a clean Coursera-inspired design aesthetic.
Problem
Traditional university portals lack proper accessibility features for blind and visually impaired students, creating barriers to essential academic services like course registration, results viewing, and payment management. Existing solutions often treat accessibility as an afterthought rather than a core design principle.
Goal
To create a fully accessible student portal that provides equal access to all university services: • Students: seamless navigation via voice commands, screen readers, and keyboard shortcuts • Accessibility: WCAG 2.1 AA compliance with advanced voice interaction • Functionality: complete academic lifecycle management from enrollment to graduation
Process
1. Accessibility Research: studied WCAG guidelines, interviewed visually impaired users, analyzed screen reader patterns 2. Feature Planning: mapped 17 core features across authentication, academics, payments, and services 3. Voice Integration: implemented Web Speech API for context-aware commands and text-to-speech 4. Responsive Design: mobile-first, Coursera-inspired clean aesthetics 5. Testing & Optimization: accessibility tested with real users
Key Features
Authentication System with voice-guided login
Course Management (registration, Study Padi modules, assessments)
Payment Activities (fee tracking with voice commands)
Student Services (health center, bedspace, documentation uploads)
Results & Certificates (raw scores, processed results, ICT certificate printing)
Voice Control (context-aware commands, text-to-speech, interruption handling)
Notifications (real-time updates with audio alerts)
Challenges
Implementing comprehensive voice navigation while maintaining visual design standards, ensuring cross-browser compatibility for Web Speech API, and balancing feature richness with accessibility requirements.
Outcome
A groundbreaking accessible student portal that sets new standards for inclusive design: • Full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance with advanced voice features • 17 integrated academic and administrative features • Seamless experience for both sighted and visually impaired users • Modern, responsive design inspired by leading educational platforms
Next Steps
• Integration with university's existing systems • Mobile app development with native accessibility features • Advanced AI-powered academic assistance • Multi-language support for international students
